Residents of some Oregon counties want to secede from their state and become part of Idaho. They’re working to get enough signatures to put their proposal on ballots in November. A little farther south, some California residents are hoping to secede and create a 51st state. Secession fever is also gripping the Midwest, where Illinois residents are trying to escape Chicago’s influence; the Northeast, where there’s a proposal to divide New York into three states; and the Southeast, where West Virginia Governor Jim Justice is welcoming counties in Virginia that want to leave their state.
