Measles is making a 20-year comeback in several New York counties along with 25 other states reporting outbreaks, with surging numbers in Oregon and Washington state. Recently anti-vaccine proponents, lax enforcement of school requirements to vaccinate, and a growing trend towards alternative medicine have all combined to fuel the outbreaks.

Yet, there’s another “special ingredient” that takes precedence. Throughout history, whenever social mood turns negative, society should anticipate an outbreak of one or more epidemics.
