Less than a month after Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s death, his son Cooper announced the November centerfold will feature French model Ines Rau, the first openly transgender playmate. He said, “It’s the right thing to do. We’re at a moment where gender roles are evolving.” The uproar was swift, yet the magazine reminded readers of similar reactions when Playboy featured its first black playmate in 1965.
