Tension flares once again in Eastern Europe. Responding to a build-up of Russian military on the Crimean border and a burst of violence in the Donbass region of Ukraine, the government in Kiev has ordered its military to the “highest level of combat readiness.”

A recently leaked British intelligence report suggests Russia’s military goals in Ukraine are “game changing.” They’re testing out new methods of warfare with prohibited weapons and could be a rehearsal for war with the West. A Russian studies expert ominously states it’s a “return of to the imperial competition of the 19th century.”

In the years since 2007, the Russian Trading System Index has plummeted and the Russian bear has come out of hibernation.
