HBO’s epic, character-rich, sex and violence-driven “Game of Thrones” began season six this past weekend. Titled “The Red Woman,” the episode’s 10.7 million viewers was a same-day record. One episode down, nine to go.

Based on George RR Martin’s fantasy novel series, the award-winning show is HBO’s most-viewed series. In 2011, The Socionomist said that the popularity of boundary-breaking shows such as “Game of Thrones” reflect social mood: “To attract and enthrall a vast number of receptive minds, a work of art also must harmonize with the collective mood of society.”
