Human traffickers are using freighters to transport migrants to Europe and then jumping ship as the vessels steam toward shore. A January 2 article in the Greek publication Kathimerini says old freighters can be purchased at “bargain basement” prices, allowing traffickers to abandon them and still make a profit. Recently, traffickers left a ship headed for Italy’s coast with 770 migrants on board. The ship was rescued by Italy’s coast guard.
