An article in the October 17 issue of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says Barbie is “weighing down” toy manufacturer Mattel. Since Barbie was introduced in 1959, opinions about the doll have fluctuated depending on social mood, and right now they aren’t so good. At times Barbie has been the ideal of pre-teen girls. At other times she has been viewed as outmoded. Mattel’s third quarter earnings are down 22% compared to last year.
