A September 30 article in The Chronicle of Higher Education says Cornell University has named its first female president. Elizabeth Garrett will take office in July 2015. Two months ago, Harvard University said its recent seminar for new college presidents attracted 23 women—almost half the total 50 attendees and more than double the two previous years. Harvard professor Judith McLaughlin noted that there has been “an increasing openness to women candidates” at institutions of higher education.
