In an escalation of global tension surrounding the political crisis in Ukraine, Russia’s Parliament this week welcomed Crimea’s referendum to splinter from the country. The chairwoman of Russia’s Federation Council compared the vote to Scotland’s own bid to secede from England. According to the Wall Street Journal, “A Russian move to absorb Crimea against the will of Ukraine’s national government would mark the first time since World War II that such a maneuver had been attempted in Europe.”
