Marcelo-SpainMarcelo, a Brazilian full-back for the Spanish soccer team Real Madrid, was the object of racist insults following his team’s victory against cross-town rival Atlético Madrid. During a 20-minute warm-down after the game, about 500 Atlético fans called Marcelo a “monkey,” according to a February 5 article in The Guardian. When Marcelo’s young son came onto the field and hugged his father, the fans chanted, “May your father die.”
