The Union of Concerned Scientists has warned that China may conduct a new anti-satellite test soon. The U.S. and China have long conducted such tests, but China is now developing the potential to destroy satellites at higher orbits, according to a late-2012 classified intelligence report. This is making the U.S. increasingly nervous, Reuters reported on Monday.
GPS, communications, weather forecasting, television and other technological boons are all at risk, both from potential aggressive acts and the clouds of supersonic junk generated in anti-satellite tests.
