French doctors will soon be legally permitted to “accelerate death” for some terminally ill and vegetative patients. A recently released report, commissioned by President Hollande, paves the way for physicians to actively assist patients wishing to end their lives.
Existing law, in place since 2005, already allows doctors to “leave patients to die,” an approach that most of the country’s medical professionals have been loathe to adopt.
