Inside the August 24, 2010 Socionomist...

Of Mice and Mood:

See Animation's History Through a Socionomic Lens

Cartoons have usually been considered children's fare. Some toons, though, push the limits of what's acceptable in the animated genre.

Such shocking cartoons contain scantily clad females, risqué dialogue and double entendres. Specifically, a quick survey of three different examples of these cartoons yields a town under the influence of laughing gas, squirrels celebrating the extinction of man, and a scandalous and racially charged parody of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

After reading these examples, you might be prone to blame the ills of modern society. Trouble is, though, that the cartoons referenced above aren't new by any means; they were released between 1933 and 1943.

What caused the genre to change so drastically? Better yet, how can you explain the dramatic shifts in tone and style across animation's history?

Euan Wilson answers these questions and much more in the August Socionomist. He walks you through animation's first 40 years step-by-step and shows you how trends in cartoons are actually reflections of waxing and waning social mood throughout the period. This in-depth study will not only alter the way you understand cartoons, it will revolutionize the way you look at popular media.

Plus, the August Socionomist gives you a timely update to Alan Hall's landmark Authoritarianism Study published in April and May 2010. In the short three months since then, his analysis has proved prescient. See for yourself:

  • Hall predicted government attempts to shut down Wikileaks.com. Since then, the website has released the controversial "Afghan War Diaries," and anger is brewing on Capitol Hill.
  • Hall also predicted increases in surveillance and a consequential escalation of anti-authoritarian actions. Since then, the Washington Post published a scathing investigation into the post-9/11 national security buildup that is "growing beyond control."
  • In addition, he anticipated governments to seek the authority to shut down the Internet if deemed necessary for security purposes. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) has since introduced a bill to give the U.S. President the power to do just that.

The August Socionomist gives you the latest updates in these disturbing trends and tells you where they might be headed next. It's critical information for any concerned citizen.
