Loose Bps Sink Ships
GAINESVILLE, Ga. / August 13, 2010 – Does an unregulated Internet undercut governments' ability to control information? Is the government’s desire to control information rising? Military officials claim recent Wikileaks posts put U.S. troops and allies in danger. Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen says the website has soldiers' blood on its hands. As prevailing mood sours and financial markets turn south, governments will increase their efforts to regulate and control the Internet says Alan Hall, a researcher at the Georgia-based Socionomics Institute. In a May 2010 study on authoritarianism, Hall observed, "A government that feels threatened by its citizens usually clamps down on the information flow. This makes the Internet a prime battleground." Hall says, "The days of unrestricted whistleblowers on the Web are numbered."
