Once a major center of the 1800s-transatlantic slave trade — the city of New Orleans this week uprooted the last of four prominent Confederate monuments. As the statue depicting Confederate General Robert E. Lee was removed, Mayor Mitch Landrieu explained:

“These monuments celebrate a fictional, sanitized Confederacy, ignoring the death, ignoring the enslavement, ignoring the terror that it actually stood for.”

Positive social mood brings “remorse”—a trait born of the larger trend toward inclusion.
